Introduce your baby to the First Friends characters
Let your child explore the toy and discover which parts move and make sounds. Help your child, if needed, by showing them all the moving and clicking parts.
If the character has a specific job, explain what that job entails and what the character does, for example: 'She's a diver - she dives underwater to look at fish or to find sunken treasure!', 'He's a pilot - he flies planes so people can go to other places!'
Encourage your child to grab the character and move it into different positions
Encourage your child to join in and imitate the sounds you hear as the characters do their work, for example, the sound of the engine as the driver speeds past in his car.
Ask your child simple questions, such as, "Can you move the head?"
Praise your child for every attempt to participate by making sounds and moving the parts
Encourage your child to talk about his or her new friend
18+ months
Talk about the characters your child had as their first friend. Mention their different characteristics, such as color, clothing, etc.
Talk to your child about the character's job—for example, what does a diver do? What kinds of things might a diver see underwater?
Introduce vocabulary such as 'sit', 'run', 'ride' etc. according to the different actions the character can demonstrate while you play
Ask your child questions about the character and encourage him/her to ask questions too!
If the opportunity arises, show your child the real-life version of his or her First Friend character and discuss the similarities between the two.
Encourage your child to play pretend with the characters. Help them come up with scenarios if needed, but also let your child come up with their own ideas as much as possible.
